UPCOMING EVENT:
We are celebrating National Library Week- April 13-19 in all the libraries.
Open houses are scheduled on the following dates:

  • April 15 at the Lillian Webb Memorial Library
  • April 16 at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library
  • April 17 at the Jenkins Public Library
  • April 18 at the Blackey Public Library

Activities are: county wide amnesty, no penalties for overdue materials, sign up for borrowers cards, art, quilt, award winning books exhibits, quilting demonstrations, door prizes, genealogy research assistance, scrap book demonstrations, after school programs and refreshments.

Letcher County Public Libraries will celebrate National Library Week

April 15 to 20, 2007 has been designated by the American Library Association to honor the importance of public libraries throughout the country. This year’s theme is “Come Together @Your Library”. The Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library in Whitesburg and the three branches: Blackey Public Library in Blackey, Lillian Webb Memorial Library in Neon and the Jenkins Public Library in Jenkins will observe the event with various activities during this week.

The Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library in Whitesburg will have an open house on April 18, 2006 and refreshments will be served throughout the day. Among the activities in the morning are:

• A quilt making demonstration by the women quilters of the Hemphill Community Center. Anyone who is interested in making quilts may obtain information from the ladies during the day. There is also a plan to organize a QUILTING CLUB at the library wherein members can meet once a week,

• Book signing by two Letcher County authors: Kristi Dixon and Sam Adams. Both authors will sign and will have books available for purchase. Miss Dixon will sign copies of:” God’s Faithful Servant” and Mr.Adams will sign “Precious Blood”.

• The Letcher County Genealogy and Historical Society will be at the library to assist anyone wishing to research their roots and will sell genealogy books produced by its members.

• Jim Cornett will set up a table for his books

• Exhibit of award winning books.

• Art exhibits at the branch libraries

• A 25.00 Wal-Mart card will be raffled at each library at the end of the week.


The schedule of open houses of the branches is as follows: The Lillian Webb Memorial Library will be on April 17, (Tuesday),
Jenkins Public Library,
on April 19, (Thursday) and the
Blackey Public
Library will be on April 20 (Friday).

The Bookmobile will be at the Food City Parking lot on April 20 to sign up borrower’s cards for patrons.

Refreshments will be served during open houses.

National Library Week will be an “Amnesty Week” wherein all fines for overdue materials will be waived. Lost movies and books will be forgiven as long as the patrons pay a minimal processing fee. Libraries will also waive the replacement fee for lost borrower’s cards.

Flyer Contest
Children may submit a drawing or complete an essay of “Why I Love the Library”and win a prize. A raffle ticket will be entered for drawing for anyone submitting a flyer. The drawing will be held on Friday, April 20.
